What We Do

School education

All children under the care of the Sangkheum Center receive school education at local schools as well as at the Center.

School attendance has been provided to 106 children aged between 4 and 17 years old. There are 45 resident children and 58 non-resident children who are going to school, fully supported by the Sangkheum Center. Beside school schedules we provide supplementary courses in mathematic and Khmer language and others school subjects.

Training courses

In order to ensure a better growth to the beneficiaries, Sangkheum Center offers the following training and recreational activities:

Khmer traditional dance

Lessons in traditional Khmer dance and music are given to the children in order to teach and remember them the importance of Cambodian tradition and culture.

89 children attend this course, among these, 35 children have been selected to be traditional dancers and music players. We perform in Siem Reap hotels and at the Center.

Khmer traditional music

11 children, aged between 13 and 17 years, attend Khmer traditional music training held by professional music teachers. They can play the traditional songs needed for our classical dance performances.

Handicraft training

12 children are currently training in handicraft production. New product designs have been provided during this training course.

12 children, aged between 10 and 17 years, attend the handicraft training course. They can make small rattan products, like buckets or tissues boxes, and some souvenir products. The main objective of this course is to increase the skills of the children and to create small handicrafts for sale to support the self-sustainability of the Sangkheum Center. The children regularly attend the activity, starting from a basic knowledge of rattan till the production of a complete handicraft product.

Dressmaking

5 girls, aged between 15 and 17 years, attend a dressmaking course. They can sew the traditional dresses necessary for the dancing performances and fix home clothes.

Care, health and hygiene

Nutrition for resident children

During this term we have been improved the quality of nourishment of our resident children. Resident children usually have three meals per day. Breakfast is at 6.30 a.m., lunch is at 11.30 a.m. and dinner is at 5.30p.m. For each meal, we choose different ingredients such as fish, vegetables, pork and beef in order to offer a balanced and nutrient diet to the children. We provide a dessert (fruits, sugar potatoes and pumpkins) twice per week.

Health and hygiene

Sangkheum Center for Children has a strong collaboration with Angkor hospital for children. Every month the doctors from Angkor children hospital come to the Center for a general medical check up of our children (resident and non resident children). All beneficiaries have been registered as patients at Angkor Children hospital. In case of emergency, we provide transportation to our resident and non resident children at the hospital.

Special events and trips

During the Khmer New year, between 13th to 17th April, the staff and the resident children of Sangkheum Center went for 4 days to Sihanoukville, a beach side town.

During the Khmer New year holidays the resident children attended different ceremonies at the pagodas and a visit to their original villages was organized.

A big party for all the beneficiaries was organized on 19th of April and all the families were invited. In this vacation on 18th July 2007 all staff and children went to Santuok mountain.

We regularly provide other special events, parties and trips including awards ceremonies for our best students.
